Drought differentially elicits antioxidant defense systems in two genotypes of Euphorbia tirucalli

Abuelsoud W., Papenbrock J., Drought differentially elicits antioxidant defense systems in two genotypes of Euphorbia tirucalli, Flora, 2019, 259:151460, doi: 10.1016/j.flora.2019.151460

The authors compare leaves and stems of Morocco and Senegal genotypes of Euphorbia tirucalli after eight weeks at 25% or 10% volumetric water content in the substrate. They measure H₂O₂, MDA, proline, phenolic compounds, glutathione, extract antioxidant capacity and activities of protective enzymes. Stems show responses involving different enzymes in the two genotypes, while leaves follow a different pattern. Interpretation of some results depends on normalization to dry mass or tissue water, and an involvement of H₂O₂ in leaf shedding remains hypothetical.

“Unexpected epiphytes” - Cacti growing on trees in the xerophytic scrubland of the Barranca de Metztitlán, México

Aguilar-Cruz Y., Flores-Martínez A., Cornejo-Romero A., Martínez-Hernández D., Sánchez-Serano S., Gómez-Hinostrosa C., Hoeber V., Zotz G., Callejas-Chavero A., “Unexpected epiphytes” - Cacti growing on trees in the xerophytic scrubland of the Barranca de Metztitlán, México, Journal of Arid Environments, 2026, 235:105617, doi: 10.1016/j.jaridenv.2026.105617

The authors inventoried approximately 1400 cacti at three xerophytic shrubland sites in Barranca de Metztitlán. They compared terrestrial and epiphytic growth, plant size and host use. Small Isolatocereus dumortieri and Myrtillocactus geometrizans individuals grew on trees, while some globose Mammillaria also flowered there. Most epiphytic cacti occurred on Neltuma laevigata.

Effect of flower orientation on the male and female traits of Myrtillocactus geometrizans (Cactaceae)

Aguilar-García S. A., Figueroa-Castro D. M., Valverde P. L., Vite F., Effect of flower orientation on the male and female traits of Myrtillocactus geometrizans (Cactaceae), Plant Biology, 2018, 20(3):531-536, doi: 10.1111/plb.12713

North-facing and south-facing flowers were compared in a population from the Tehuacán Valley. Orientation was associated with differences in most traits examined, including pollen production and some measures of pollen quality. Southern flowers had more anthers, among other differences, and their pollen germinated better in laboratory conditions. Greater resource availability under higher illumination remains a proposed mechanism for these associations.

Reproductive biology of Myrtillocactus geometrizans (Cactaceae) flowers with contrasting orientation

Aguilar-García S. A., Figueroa-Castro D. M., Valverde P. L., Vite F., López-Ortega G., Pérez-Hernández M. A., Reproductive biology of Myrtillocactus geometrizans (Cactaceae) flowers with contrasting orientation, Plant Species Biology, 2022, 37(3):243-256, doi: 10.1111/1442-1984.12371

This paper compares phenology, floral structure, visiting insects and reproduction on opposing sides of Myrtillocactus geometrizans plants. Controlled pollination distinguishes pollen origin and measures of seed production. Differences in traits and floral timing are compared with similar reproductive success in the two orientations.

Dynamics of intracellular mannan and cell wall folding in the drought responses of succulent Aloe species

Ahl L. I., Mravec J., Jørgensen B., Rudall P. J., Rønsted N., Grace O. M., Dynamics of intracellular mannan and cell wall folding in the drought responses of succulent Aloe species, Plant, Cell & Environment, 2019, 42(8):2458-2471, doi: 10.1111/pce.13560

This study compares leaf tissues of Aloe vera and Aloe helenae during water deficit. Microscopy, epitope localisation and polysaccharide profiling reveal cell-wall folding and changes in mannan-associated signals. Separating tissues and extraction fractions provides a more precise account of leaf reorganisation during dehydration.

Regeneration of Schlumbergera truncata ‘Russian Dancer’ through somatic embryogenesis. Callus culture history and the sequence of media affected embryo numbers, structure and adventitious shoot production. Anatomy confirmed the embryos' bipolar organisation. The authors also assessed subsequent growth and plant survival after transfer to substrate.
