Observations of young Eulychnia acida and Echinopsis chiloensis in Las Chinchillas Reserve compare open ground and the vicinity of five shrub species. The study relates young-cactus distribution to microhabitat availability and examines subsequent growth and survival. Shrub association and the fate of an established plant provide separate levels of nurse-effect assessment.
