Article2003

Raguso R. A., Henzel C., Buchmann S. L., Nabhan G. P., Trumpet flowers of the Sonoran Desert: Floral biology of Peniocereus cacti and sacred Datura, International Journal of Plant Sciences, 2003, 164(6):877-892, doi: 10.1086/378539

The comparison of nocturnal Peniocereus and Datura flowers covers phenology, pollination, nectar, spectral reflectance and scent composition. Eight benzenoid compounds were found in Peniocereus greggii, whereas no scent was detected in the limited P. striatus sample. The authors consider indirect facilitation of cactus pollination by Datura as a hypothesis requiring further experiments.
