The authors compare viability and redox status in Escontria chiotilla and Stenocereus pruinosus seeds stored dry ex situ or buried in xerophytic shrubland soil. An experiment using seeds from the same harvest showed species differences in the timing of viability loss across rainy and dry seasons. Death was accompanied by an oxidative shift in the glutathione redox potential, whereas MDA and oxidized proteins had limited value as indicators of this process.
